Coloured Screws vs Traditional Screws

Screws are the glue that hold construction projects together, making a bigger difference than you might think. Traditionally, silver screws have been the ‘one-size-fits-all solution’, but nowadays, the options expand way beyond just one colour.

At Coloured Screws, we offer any fixing in any RAL colour. Whether it’s providing the perfect colour-match for your cladding panels, or adding corrosion & UV-resistance to your signage projects - our custom, powder-coated screws take aesthetic appeal and durability to the next level.

Why choose coloured screws over traditional screws?

For undertakings that prioritise appearance and longevity, such as professional cladding or signage installations, you should choose coloured screws for their enhanced aesthetics and improved durability. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

  • Seamless finish: At Coloured Screws, we offer a 95% colour accuracy matched to Dibond® colour standards, ensuring your screws blend into your materials seamlessly and the fixings look almost invisible.

  • Contrasting accents: If you’d prefer a bold contrast against your project’s materials, coloured screws can also provide this. Creating a striking visual feature that stands out against the crowd.

  • More durability: Our robust, UV-resistant powder-coated finish can withstand harsh outdoor conditions with ease. Paired with a stainless steel body, this formidable combination means no chipping, cracking or corroding.

Who benefits most from coloured screws?

Coloured screws are crucial for aesthetics and durability, which is important for cladders, construction workers, sign-makers and those who undertake DIY projects. Here’s why:

  • Cladders: Cladders need specialised screws to secure their materials properly. But aesthetics are equally important in helping add a high-end finish to the project. That’s why we offer powder coated Hardie Panel Screws and Cladco Fibre Cement Board Screws to guarantee high performance and seamless aesthetics with every installation.

  • Construction trades: As with all trades, time is money. Designed to save you money on labour costs, our coloured self drilling screws (available in 4.2 x 13mm, 4.2 x 25mm, or 4.8 x 40mm) negate the need for pre-drilled pilot holes!

  • Sign makers: Design is king when it comes to sign-making. Whether your project requires an exact colour-match, or would benefit from a strategic contrast, we offer 216 RAL colours - so the choice is yours!

  • ‘DIYers’: There are a lot of practical considerations to make when you decide to take on a DIY project that coloured screws provide all of the answers to. For example, you could use green screws with pressure-treated timber to avoid staining. Or oak coloured screws to blend with projects that involve wooden structures to give them a high-end finish.

How to choose the right coloured screw for your DIY project:

Choosing the right coloured screw for your DIY project depends on which finish you would prefer, whether any specialist materials are needed and which type will suit your application best. Here are some of our top tips:

  1. Decide whether you want to create a colour-match or contrasting accent: Colour-matched screws are well-suited to decking and sheds when the screw head is visible and needs to blend in with the material. Whereas, contrasting accents work well for furniture making, cabinetry and wooden structures.

  2. Match the screw to its environment: Opting for a stainless steel screw is the best choice, as the corrosion-resistance is ideal for both internal and external applications.

  3. Select the correct type of screw: It goes without saying that different materials require different screws. For example, our Hardie Panel & Cladco Fibre Cement Screws work well for cladding projects. But if it’s a DIY roofing project you’ve undertaken, our Coloured Roofing Tek Bolts (available in 5.5 x 38mm or 5.5 x 70mm) are the way to go.

Which coloured screws do you offer?

We offer any fixing in any RAL colour, but we do have 4 main collections:

  1. Cladding Screws

  2. Construction Screws

  3. Wood Screws

  4. Metal Screws

Coloured Screws vs Traditional Screws: FAQs

What are coloured screws used for?

Coloured screws are used for projects where a seamless (or contrasting) appearance and enhanced durability, i.e. for external applications, are the main priorities. This can include:

  • Cladding

  • Signage

  • Roofing

  • Construction

Can coloured screws be used outdoors?

Yes, our colour headed screws are perfect for outdoor projects due to their stainless steel bodies (which naturally resist corrosion) and their powder-coated finishes (which offer impressive UV-resistance).

How are powder-coated screws different from painted screws?

Powder-coated screws offer a highly durable, UV-resistant finish formed by spraying dry powder which is then cured with heat. Whereas, painted screws are sprayed with paint and then air-dried. Here’s why you should choose powder-coated screws:

  • Durability: Powder-coating creates a very robust, chip-resistant finish that will not fade or rust, even in outdoor conditions.

  • Eco-friendliness: Paints contain solvents and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) which can impact the environment by indirectly contributing towards climate change.

  • Appearance: Powder-coated screws have a consistent finish with a long-lasting colour and gloss stability. On the other hand, paint is very prone to chipping during installation which can decrease aesthetic appeal and increase the level of maintenance needed (for visible/accessible screws).

Are coloured screws worth it for DIY projects?

Yes, coloured screws provide a seamless (or contrasting), professional finish while saving you time on painting or covering up traditional screw heads with plastic caps, which are also an environmental concern.
