What Are Coloured Self-Drilling Screws?
What Are Coloured Self-Drilling Screws?
A good all-rounder in the construction world, coloured self-drilling screws (also known as tek screws) are a versatile fastener - engineered to save you time on a range of light to heavy-duty construction projects, as well as deliver on aesthetics.
In this guide, we’ll break down what coloured self-drilling screws are, what you can use them for, the key benefits of a colour-matched approach and how to choose the right type/length for your project.
What Are Self-Drilling Screws?
Designed for securing a wide range of materials, our self-drilling coloured screws allow you to drill, tap and fasten in one movement - without pre-drilling pilot holes!
How, you ask? Well, the drill-shaped point does it all for you. Acting like a miniature drill bit, the point creates its own pilot hole by cutting through the material as it’s driven in. Then, the screw's threads engage to secure the fastening in a single operation.
What Can You Use Self-Drilling Screws For?
Whether you’re a roofer, builder, cladder, or even a ‘DIYer’ - our self-drilling range has got you covered.
- Metal: Designed for heavy-duty installations, our self-drilling coloured screws work well for fastening metal to other materials, or even for metal-to-metal applications - e.g. joining metal roofing, frames or ductwork in steel construction.
- Wood: While wood screws may be your first point of call, self-drilling screws can be useful for certain, light-duty wooden applications - such as the construction or repair of a shed/outbuilding.
- Plastic/Composite Materials: For certain applications in certain environments, self-drilling screws can also be used to secure plastic or composite sheets together - e.g. for cladding, ductwork or piping projects.
Why Choose Self-Drilling Coloured Screws?
Screws are the miniature backbone of construction projects - not only do they need to deliver on functionality, but they have to look the part too. That’s where our self-drilling coloured screws come in.
When fixings are visible, aesthetic appeal is everything. Avoid mismatched projects and unhappy customers with colour headed screws that can be powder-coated in any RAL colour.
Whether you need to match roofing or cladding sheets to a building’s exterior, or ensure your professional signage has a cohesive finish (or contrasting accents!) - our reliable Self-Drilling Coloured Screws provide 95% RAL colour-match accuracy, so you can rest assured your fixings will blend in seamlessly, or stand out from the crowd. The choice is yours.

How to Choose the Right Self-Drilling Coloured Screws For Your Project
- Metal-to-Wood & Metal-to-Metal: Self-Drilling Hex Screws work well for metal-to-wood and metal-to-metal applications, as the hexagonal head provides a secure grip for thicker materials like metal.
- Light-Duty Projects: Coloured Self-Drilling Screws (4.2 x 13mm) can be used for light projects due to their short bodies, e.g. those involving thin sheet metal, drywall stud and track systems, plastic, etc.
- Precision-Fastening: Coloured Self-Drilling Screws (4.2 x 25mm) are ideal for light-duty professional applications that require a strong hold with high-precision, e.g. thin panels of signage or cladding.
- Heavy-Duty Projects: Coloured Self-Drilling Screws (4.8 x 40mm) have superior holding power due to their longer bodies, and are therefore designed for securing thicker panels and layered materials. E.g. Thick metal cladding, roofing or signage.

Self-Drilling Screws: FAQs
What’s the difference between self-drilling screws and self-tapping screws?
- Self-Drilling Screws: Drill, tap and fasten in a singular movement without the need for pre-drilled pilot holes. They can be used for both thick and thin construction materials.
- Self-Tapping Screws: Tap their own threads but are unable to drill through metal like self-drilling screws can. Therefore, they require pre-drilled pilot holes before installation.
Are self-drilling hex screws the same as our other self-drilling screws?
They are similar, but not exactly the same. Both screws use the same point, ensuring they can be installed directly into metal. However, our self-drilling screws use a flange head. Whereas, our hex screws feature a hexagonal head for a tighter grip/higher torque transmission (when used with a socket or hex driver).
